Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program
The program works with local communities to help improve heart health in the Pilbara.
In 2020, the Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program marks its sixth year. Delivered by the Heart Foundation with support from Chevron Australia, the program works with local communities to improve heart health.
About the Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program
The Heart Foundation is working to close the gap in life expectancy by reducing cardiovascular disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Currently, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are almost twice as likely to die from these conditions compared to non-indigenous Australians.
The Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program focuses on improving heart health outcomes in three communities in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia: Karratha, Onslow and Roebourne.
The local Aboriginal community helped guide the development of the program to ensure the work is culturally appropriate and meets local needs. The program delivers heart health activities across:
- Nutrition
- Physical activity and exercise
- Heart health education
- Access to health services
New resources
The Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program team have collaborated with health professionals and community members to develop culturally appropriate and practical health information:- Warning signs of heart attack action plan
- Recipe booklet “Cooking in the Pilbara”
- Get a heart check animation
Working together with Chevron
Leading energy company Chevron Australia partners with the Heart Foundation to deliver the Pilbara Aboriginal Heart Health Program in remote Western Australian communities.
