Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term that includes heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases, and is one of Australia’s largest health problems. It accounts for one in four of all deaths, claiming the life of one person every 13 minutes.

Prevalence1

  • More than 4 million people self-report CVD
  • ​This represents 16.6 per cent of the population

Deaths2

  • It causes one in four of all deaths
  • CVD claims the life of one person every 13 minutes
  • ​Almost double the number of males die from CVD compared to females

Hospitalisations3

  • Someone is hospitalised for CVD every minute
  • There’s a total of 1600 hospitalisations per day
  • More men than women are admitted for CVD
  • $5 billion spent on providing health care services, mainly patient services
