Key Statistics: Coronary Heart Disease

CHD includes heart attacks and angina, and is the leading cause of death in Australia1. Deaths from CHD represent 68,532 years of potential life lost in Australia.

Prevalence2

  • 2.4 per cent of people report they’re living with CHD
  • It’s more common for men (3.2 per cent) to report living with CHD than women (1.7 per cent)

Deaths3

  • CHD claims more lives than any other disease
  • It causes one in 10 deaths
  • CHD kills one person every 30 minutes
  • ​There are 48 deaths due to CHD every day

Hospitalisations4

  • Approximately 443 per day
  • More than twice as many men hospitalised, compared to women
